We recently moved into a smaller rental property while we are in the throws of planning and building our new home. One of the challenges with a smaller space is making all of our oversized furniture fit, particularly our rectangular wooden coffee table.
Selecting The Perfect Coffee Table
When it comes to furnishing a smaller living area, it is vital for the space not to feel cluttered. In addition, each piece of furniture in a small space should have a purpose and enhance the overall aesthetic.
Selecting the perfect coffee table is important because it provides a focal point in the room as well as functionality and can enhance the overall design style.
I am sharing a few tips on how to select the perfect coffee table for your small space:
Size Does Matter
When shopping for any furniture item for a small space, remember to first measure the area where you intend to place it. A coffee table should complement your seating arrangement and not overcrowd it. Leave about 1/2 a meter of space between the table and your couch or armchairs to ensure easy movement and access. Round or oval-shaped tables are ideal, as they are less bulky and can make a small area feel more open.
A Multi-Functional Coffee Table
In a small living area, every piece of furniture should ideally serve multiple purposes. Coffee tables that double as storage solutions, with shelves, drawers, or have a lift-top design, are a great option. I also love nesting tables for small spaces, as they slot into each other, saving space when not all in use.
Select Light and Airy Designs
Choose coffee tables made from materials that make the space feel light and airy. Glass-topped tables or those with a metal base can create the illusion of more space. Transparent materials are visually less heavy and allow light to pass through, making the room feel bigger.
Style and Design
Always remember to stay true to your personal style when decorating. Whether you prefer something modern, rustic, or eclectic, there are usually a variety of options to choose from. A bold table can serve as a statement piece, while a more understated table will blend seamlessly with your existing furniture. Colour, texture, and timeless design also play a part when selecting a core item of furniture. Materials like glass and metal add a more contemporary feel, while wood can bring in more warmth.
Height and Shape
The height of your coffee table should ideally be level with the seats of your sofa or chairs. Having a table that is too high or too low is not functional. Additionally, the shape of your coffee table should be an important consideration. As I mentioned, a round table is great for small spaces as it can facilitate flow and movement, while rectangular options can fit neatly into a corner.
Less is More
In a compact space, less is definitely more. Choose a coffee table that offers simplicity without sacrificing style. Minimalistic designs with clean lines help maintain an uncluttered look, making your small area feel more spacious.
Coffee Table Decor
Coffee table decor is the perfect way to add a personal touch, interesting design and a splash of colour to your space. I do this by adding a tray with a vase of flowers, a selection of books, and candles, making the area more cosy and inviting. It is essential, however, not to overcrowd the surface.
In Closing
Choosing the correct coffee table for your small space can dramatically enhance the style and function of the room. I hope you are inspired by the tips I have shared and that you have fun finding the perfect piece that complements your living area while keeping it open and inviting. Happy decorating!
