Stellenzicht, in Stellenbosch, is fast becoming one of my favourite wine estates! Grant and I recently visited the Stellenzicht Wine Pod for a wonderfully cosy lunch. If you have yet to visit, it is definitely a must!
Stellenzicht Wine Pod
Not only does Stellenzicht produce fantastic award-winning wines, but they are also home to a rather unique tasting room. The Stellenzicht Wine Pod effortlessly blends nature and architecture, allowing guests to be fully immersed in the beauty of the landscape. The focal point of the wine pod is undoubtedly the breathtaking views.
Sustainable Winemaking Practices
Stellenzicht is fully committed to sustainability and protecting natural resources through sustainable farming practices. Their dedicated efforts have successfully created an ecosystem that supports and protects the surrounding fauna and flora. They proudly celebrate the return of the dragonfly population to their farm! This highly adaptive creature, which also features in its branding, serves as a testament to Stellenzicht’s ability to adapt and find balance with nature.
They also look to nature and its natural indicators to nurture the terroir and the biodiversity around their vineyards. By adjusting their sustainable farming and winemaking practices to suit the terroir, they can ultimately create wines that truly express the unique qualities of the land.
Stellenzicht Wines
The primary wine varietals of focus at Stellenzicht are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cinsault and Chardonnay. My favourite Stellenzicht reds are the award-winning Arenite Syrah and the Silcrete Cinsault.
I also love their Thunderstone Rosé, which is a blend of Shiraz and Cinsault. The Thunderstone Red is a great option if you enjoy a red wine blend, as it is a delicious combination of Cinsault, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grant’s wine of choice is the Thunderstone Chardonnay, which is a great expression of Stellenbosch terroir. It is not overly wooded but rather fruit-driven, with vibrant aromas of fresh citrus and apricots and finishes with lovely white floral notes.
The Stellenzicht Wine Pod
The wine pod is ideal for relaxing, unwinding and enjoying a great time with friends and family. With the majestic Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains framing either side, visitors are treated to a panoramic view that further enhances your enjoyment of their fine wines and great food.
Whether seated indoors or on the patio, you can appreciate the tranquillity and natural beauty as you taste Stellenzicht’s amazing selection of wines. But it’s not just about the wine; delectable wood-fired pizzas (some of the best I have ever tasted!) and mouth-watering cheese boards await.
To accompany your wine tasting, I recommend a Cheese Board for two, which includes a selection of local cheeses, olives, preserved tomato jam, fruit and jalapeno jelly, served with fresh ciabatta bread. You also have the option of adding a selection of charcuterie.
The pizza menu includes five options. Choosing just one has become challenging as they are all delicious. Among my favourites are Spanish Sausage, Smoked Chicken and Vegetarian. You really cannot go wrong with any of their pizzas – my advice is to order a few for the table and share. It is the best way to try them all!
In Closing
No matter the weather, visiting Stellenzicht is always a memorable experience! Delicious mouth-watering pizza, fantastic wine, great company, and excellent service – what more can one ask for?
