After a rather busy start to the year, Grant and I stole away for a romantic stay at the Taj Cape Town. A much-needed opportunity to recharge!
The Taj Cape Town
The Taj Cape Town, the ultimate in Luxury and Warm Hospitality, seamlessly blends modern South African opulence with Old World Indian charm. This luxurious inner-city Hotel is conveniently located in the CBD. Thus allowing you to experience all the magical splendour that Cape Town has to offer.
The property is a short distance from many of the Mother City’s famous attractions, including the Iziko South African National Gallery, Signal Hill, and the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, not to forget a plethora of eateries and bars.
Boasting 176 elegantly decorated rooms with panoramic views of the City or iconic Table Mountain, the Hotel has accommodation options to suit the most decerning traveller. Our suite had the most stunning view of Table Mountain, the perfect backdrop to enjoy a glass of chilled bubbly!
With hospitality in the Cape regaining momentum, recent refurbishments to the Hotel’s ground floor could not have been more timeous!
Wining & Dining
The Lobby Lounge & Bar
One of the areas to receive a refresh is the grand Lobby Lounge; the architecture of the old South African Reserve Bank remains intact, but key touchpoints have been updated to create a fresher appearance to appeal to the modern traveller.
In addition, there are several new experiences for Taj guests to enjoy. The Lobby Bar, for instance, now features an even more spectacular view of the iconic St George’s Cathedral, thanks to the installation of a large, customised bar, perfectly positioned so that the Cathedral is framed between the gorgeous sash windows.
The Lobby Lounge and Bar are perfect for business meetings or pre-dinner drinks. They offer a menu with a wide range of refreshments, signature cocktails, sumptuous bites and delectable canapés. Before our whiskey tasting, we were treated to a delicious cocktail called “Love Potion”, specially created for the month of love.
Taj Cape Town Whiskey Bar
Taj Cape Town has also introduced a Whiskey Bar, offering an extensive range of fine whiskeys. Grant and I enjoyed a very informative whiskey tasting hosted by Andrew Chirauka, Taj Cape Town’s whiskey sommelier. Being a novice whiskey drinker, this was the perfect way to learn more about “the water of life” while sampling different malts and blends from around the world.
Restaurants at Taj Cape Town
Recently appointed Executive Chef Keshan Ramburan brings exotic flavours to Taj Cape Town. As a Silwood School of Cookery graduate Keshan’s skillset has seen him working at a host of prestigious kitchens, lodges and hotels around the country.
Going forward, Keshan and his team will be keenly focused on creating bespoke culinary experiences for guests and ensuring that both restaurants at the Hotel – the Bombay Brasserie and Mint – live up to heightened expectations.
Mint Restaurant
The furnishings at Mint Restaurant have received a bold, dramatic update, along with the introduction of wood-fired grills. This addition creates a new dimension to the space and an element of theatricality.
Furthermore, a new small plates menu is now available, including various delicious dishes cooked on the new wood-fired grills – enjoy as part of a leisurely lunch or with after-work drinks.
Bombay Brasserie
Bombay Brasserie remains one of my favourite Indian restaurants in Cape Town. The restaurant offers an eclectic blend of classic and contemporary Indian cuisine.
Our most recent dinner experience lived up to past experiences. Diners can choose from an a la carte menu or an array of small plate dishes, allowing you to experience a refined interpretation of Indian street food. Highlights of the evening included a starter of Adraki Lamb Chops – finger-licking good ginger and masala charred karoo lamb chops. The main course highlight was the Line Fish Alleppey, a fish curry from the Kerala region – a beautifully fragrant blend of spices, coconut and green mango.
Jiva Spa
The last item on our itinerary was a much-needed and extremely relaxing couples treatment at the Jiva Spa. Jiva Spa draws on the culture of Indian royalty through the centuries and 6000-year-old Eastern wellness philosophies devised to align body, soul and mind.
Grant and I enjoyed a full-body aromatherapy massage, which was pure bliss! If you need pampering, I highly recommend a visit to Jiva Spa – you will leave relaxed and revived. Treatments on offer include massages, body scrubs, body wraps, facials, waxing and pedicures.
In Closing
Our stay at the Taj Cape Town was the ultimate spoil – from the perfectly chilled bubbly on arrival, a fantastic whiskey tasting and delicious food to the most relaxing couples spa treatment! It would be remiss of me not to mention the top-notch service at the Hotel – incredible attention to detail as well as warm hospitality, made for an authentic five-star experience.
