There are so many wine regions in the Cape that I have yet to explore properly — one of these being the historic Tulbagh Valley. The red wines from Saronsberg Cellar, in Tulbagh, have always been among my favourites, making it hard to believe that I had yet to visit the estate. All that changed with a recent trip to Saronsberg Cellar and a stay in their Vineyard Cottages.
Saronsberg Cellar
You will find Saronsberg Cellar in the Upper Breede River Valley, in Tulbagh. The picturesque wine estate boasts a contemporary cellar and stylish tasting room, decorated in earthy tones, with large glass doors leading out into the beautiful garden. As well as producing award-winning wine Saronsberg is also home to a fabulous collection of contemporary South African art.
Saronsberg’s winemaking history officially began in 2004 with the harvest of their first Sauvignon Blanc grapes, a vintage that earned numerous awards. Dewaldt Heyns has been head winemaker at Saronsberg since 2003. His passion for winemaking and consistent success earned him acceptance to the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild in 2008.
Since then Saronsberg has gone from strength to strength and become renowned for producing excellent wines, especially their Shiraz.
Saronsberg Wine Highlights
Before we checked into the Saronsberg Vineyard Cottages, we popped in at the tasting room for a spot of wine tasting and a cheese platter.
A few wine highlights during our tasting were the 2016 Brut MCC, the 2017 Viognier and the Saronsberg Rosé 2019 – as you know I love a good Rosé!
The 2017 Shiraz is a must if you are a Shiraz lover and the Provenance Shiraz is a great affordable, easy-drinking red!
Vineyard Cottages
Saronsberg Vineyard Cottages are the ideal base when exploring the Tulbagh Valley. We were only there for one night but I recommend staying for a bit longer to experience the area in more detail.
The 1 or 2 bedroomed self-catering cottages are cosy and well equipped, with an open-plan kitchen, lounge and dining area. An indoor fireplace is ideal for snuggling up with a glass of red on cold evenings. In addition, there is an outdoor braai area.
Units also have airconditioning and ceiling fans. The cottages are pet-friendly and share a communal swimming pool.
