We recently escaped the city for a Winelands glamping experience, at the new AfriCamps at Doolhof Wine Estate, in Wellington.
AfriCamps at Doolhof
Yes, you heard me correct, glamping in the Cape Winelands! The new AfriCamps luxury tented camp is located at the foothills of the Groenberg Mountain Range, beneath the Bainskloof Pass. AfriCamps at Doolhof set within the award-winning Doolhof Wine Estate, is a short drive from the picturesque town of Wellington. Travel time from Cape Town is just over an hour’s drive.
Those who know me well, know that I do not enjoy camping. Glamping, however, is something I am willing to do! Well, we spent a wonderful weekend glamping in luxury at AfriCamps at Doolhof, exploring the outdoors and sipping on fantastic Doolhof wines. Continue reading to the end to find out how you can win a Winelands glamping experience worth R4780!
The Tents
The six AfriCamps luxury glamping tents set in the most picturesque location, surrounded by vineyards, have the most magical mountain views. In addition, you can hear the sound of the Kromme River, in the distance, which only adds to the tranquillity.
Each tent sleeps a maximum of five people, in two queen size beds and a bunk bed. The shared bathroom, with a shower, toilet and handbasin, can be accessed from both bedrooms. Furthermore, tents have air conditioning, as well as a wood-burning fireplace, making them ideal for summer or winter.
The tents also have a fully equipped kitchenette, with a small fridge freezer, a four burner hob and a compact oven. As well as indoor cooking facilities, the outside braai/barbeque area is perfect for alfresco summertime cooking. Indoor and outdoor dining tables, both comfortably seat up to five people.
Finally, my favourite feature, the outdoor wood-fired hot tub, situated next to your tent, is the best place to enjoy the fantastic views. This was indeed the ideal spot to spend a few hours soaking away any of life’s stresses.
Eating & Drinking
If you are wanting to self-cater without the headache of packing everything baring the kitchen sink, AfriCamps have you covered with a variety of pre-booked “DIY” meal options. These include a “Cook Your Own” Breakfast Basket, Braai Pack and Picnic Baskets. Picnics options also include your choice of Doolhof white or red wine.
Another option is to eat out at one of the great restaurants or coffee shops in the area. A recent restaurant discovery in the area, The Stone Kitchen, offers fantastic home-style cooking. I do however recommend ordering the meals, allowing you to spend more time in this beautiful setting.
Activities at AfriCamps at Doolhof
Wine Tasting
A visit to the Doolhof tasting room, to taste their range of award-winning wines, is a must. Doolhof produces two white varietals, namely Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Red wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Merlot, Pinotage and Shiraz.
During our stay we were fortunate to taste a selection of the estates wines. One that made a particular impression is The Minotaur, a Cape Blend, from the Legends of the Labyrinth range.
In addition to wine tasting, you will be happy to know that the tasting room also serves lunch. I can highly recommend either a platter or a delicious burger.
Hikes, Walks & Mountain Biking
For outdoor enthusiasts, the estate has a host of activities. Namely a 5km vineyard hike, a river walk along the Kromme River, and a mountain bike trail. Not to forget a 3.5km bike trail for the kids.
Guests can rent mountain bikes from the tasting room at R150 per day, naturally this is subject to availability. Alternatively, bring your own.
Even if you are not particularly outdoorsy, I recommend a walk around the estate to appreciate the surrounding natural beauty.
Hot Tub
As I mentioned earlier, one of my favourite features of the luxury tents are the wood-burning hot tubs. After a day spent adventuring and exploring the estate, fire up the outdoor hot tub and relax with a glass of wine.
Soaking in the “hot tub” is the perfect way to take the edge off chilly winter days and equally great for cooling down during summer.
The Labyrinth
A small labyrinth, constructed close to the entrance of the farm, serves as a tribute to the Estate’s history. Doolhof, so named because of the estate’s many hills and valleys, in fact, means labyrinth in Afrikaans.
Labyrinths, as opposed to mazes, offer only one entry and exit point, and a single pathway to the centre. Winding your way through the Labyrinth is a fun experience for kids and adults alike.
Closing Thoughts
