Many of you may know Coco Safar for their excellent coffee and incredible French-inspired couture pâtisserie experience. What you might not know is that is not all they do. Recently Grant and I were invited to the restaurant, in Sea Point, for a Coco Safar Dinner Experience with a difference.
Coco Safar Rooibos Bar
Our Coco Safar Dinner Experience began with a tasting of their Rooibos Cold Brews, at the Rooibos Bar, located just outside the restaurant. The cold brews are a range of non-alcoholic rooibos drinks, made on site at their micro-brewery. Most intriguing for me is their Sparkling Citrus Cold Brew.

It was then on to the main event of dinner in the restaurant. For those who have not been Coco Safar is what I would term a retro space, with cinematic lighting and mellow ambient music. In fact, both Grant and I loved the music, so much so that we downloaded it when we got home.
On The Menu
Once settled at our table our waiter explained the menu, as well as the wine selection. You have the option of either a two or a three-course Prix Fixe menu. My only negative is that I found the menu selection to be a bit limited, especially the starters. The wine list is small but the wine on offer all excellent quality.
Starters
One of the highlights for me was the bread course of Steamed Bao Buns, which were so delicious, we ate every last morsel. For starters I opted for the Boule Feta Dish, which although sceptical at first, I enjoyed. Grant had the Roasted Cauliflower Steak, with a Leek Velouté, which is one of their vegan dishes.
Mains
My choice for mains was the Bass Curry, which was wonderfully fragrant, with a lovely chilli heat to it. Grant opted for the Smoked Brisket, which is thinly sliced and served with vegetables. Other main options included a Pumpkin Rissoto, Ostrich Lasagne and Mutton Casserole.
Desserts
There are only two dessert options the Tropical and the Botanical. Grant and I decided to have one of each. Grant chose the Tropical, which is a rice pudding in a dark chocolate ring, topped with a passion and mango puree. Naturally, that left me with the Botanical, which is a rather unusual combination of olive oil ganache with mint pannacotta, pickled apple and cucumber, and thyme ice cream. I found the Botanical refreshing, as well as being slightly more savoury, while the Tropical hit the sweet spot.
Last but not least we were invited to the Espresso Bar for an after dinner surprise. The treat turned out to be one of my favourite coffee style desserts, an affogato. I won’t give too much away as it is meant to be a “surprise”.
