Almost two years ago we visited the Lanzerac Hotel and Spa for a memorable overnight romantic getaway. Sadly, last year, a devastating fire destroyed integral parts of the hotel, which made significant restoration necessary. I was invited back, before the official opening, to experience the revival first-hand.
Rise of The Phoenix
While the Deli and Spa have been operational, the Lanzerac Hotel and The Manor kitchen officially reopened their doors on the 1st July 2018. As I mentioned after a devastating fire in 2017 extensive restoration was necessary. From the ashes, we witnessed the Rise of the Phoenix.
The Lanzerac Hotel and Spa
For those of you unfamiliar with Lanzerac, the Stellenbosch Estate showcases some of the region’s most beautiful examples of Cape Dutch architecture, dating back as far as 1692. They also produce some of the most delicious wine in the area.
When we last visited the Lanzerac Hotel and Spa in 2016, it had just undergone a significant transformation. I was impressed with the great care taken during renovations, to preserve the historical integrity of the estate. Unfortunately, due to the fire, much of the process had to begin again. An opportunity also presented itself for further change and modernisation of other areas within the hotel. As before, the vision for the Lanzerac Hotel remains the same – to create a seamless blend of period grandeur and contemporary style.
Each time I drive down the oak-lined driveway, arriving at this 326-year-old working wine estate, I am in awe of the picturesque landscape, lush gardens and beautifully restored historic buildings.
Upon arrival at the new Hotel Reception area, in The Governor’s Hall, I was at a loss for words. Let me assure you that doesn’t happen often. The exposed truss ceilings, stunning chandeliers, as well as two fireplaces, made for a rather grand first impression. I afraid that my photo does not do it justice.
Guest Rooms & Suites
Lanzerac Hotel and Spa boasts 53 exquisitely styled rooms or suites. Each room reflects the rich history of the Estate, carefully balanced with contemporary decor influences.
When redesigning the interiors, both space and privacy were of paramount importance. The vision was to create a unique feel in each space, with the result no two rooms are alike. Interiors are sophisticated and elegant, incorporating a selection of timeless pieces.
The luxury extends to the marble en-suite bathrooms, which are all generous in size. Bathrooms feature a luxurious bath and shower.
You will be delighted to know that the guest rooms are all equipped with international plugs, as well as connectivity points. Room amenities also include king size beds, underfloor heating, Wi-Fi, climate controlled air conditioning, a tea and coffee station complete with a Nespresso machine and complimentary minibar, amongst others.
5-Star Excellence
Staying at the hotel before the official opening, was an absolute privilege. Admittedly expectations were high, having had a memorable stay at the hotel once before!
The newly restored Lanzerac Hotel lived up to and exceeded our expectations, something I can honestly say does not happen often. Our experience is what I can only describe as 5-Star excellence on steroids. Something I have also realised recently is 5-Star Excellence is not necessarily just about the luxury and opulence. A guest’s experience needs to be top-drawer, from beginning to end to achieve such a high level of excellence. In my opinion, it is often the small, understated details that impress the most.
From our lunch and breakfast at the deli, and a Lanzerac Wine Tasting, to our stunning Junior Suite, it was the perfect winter retreat. Not to forget our delicious meal, at the new Manor Kitchen but more about that in a separate post.
Winter Retreat Package
As I mentioned, The hotel officially reopened on the 1st July 2018, To celebrate the reopening and make winter a bit more bearable, they are offering a fantastic Winter Retreat Package.

I love the interior design: The rooms look very warm and inviting without being pretentious. We’ll consider including Lanzerac on our route in Stellenbosch for sure. Thanks for the recommendation!
