You may have read my recent review on Steenberg Spa, where I enjoyed a wonderful winter spa day. As well as pampering we were also treated to Catharina’s Restaurant Winter Lunch Special.
Catharina’s Restaurant at Steenberg
Catharina’s Restaurant, located on Steenberg Wine Estate is on the picturesque Constantia Wine Route. The restaurant celebrates the legacy of Catharina Ras, a true adventurer at heart and the woman who started it all and founded the farm, in the 17th century.
This beautiful restaurant serves delicious contemporary food, using only the best fresh produce, cooked simply and beautifully presented. The menu focuses on simplicity, allowing the quality ingredients to shine through.
Catharina’s boasts the main restaurant, a bar area, as well as a separate dining area, perfect for special celebrations. The interior decor throughout, from the bar to the restaurant, is an elegant mix of modern and old-school glamour. A multitude of origami swans suspended from the ceiling, adds to the magical feel of the space.
Catharina’s Restaurant Winter Lunch Special
After our treatments at the Steenberg Spa, we made our way to Catharina’s for lunch. We were all looking forward to a delicious meal and a glass of bubbly, or possibly two.
The Catharina’s Restaurant Winter Lunch Special is valid from the 9th April to the 31st October 2018. A two-course lunch costs R185 and three courses are R215. There are also vegetarian options on request.
On The Menu
Before ordering lunch, we decided that a bottle of Steenberg Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc was in order and the perfect way to start our meal. The starter specials on the winter menu included a Roast cream of tomato soup or Roasted butternut, chickpeas, quinoa, red onion, feta, toasted pumpkin seeds, baby leaves and a mustard dressing.
I decide on the Roast Cream of tomato soup, which tasted delicious and was a perfect antidote for the chilly winter weather.
For mains, the Sous vide pork belly, rosemary crushed potato, garlic and ginger stirfry vegetables and a turmeric and lemon sauce was the most popular choice. There was also a Grilled chicken breast, served with a mushroom and cauliflower risotto.
My choice for mains was the Pork belly, and I loved all the flavours especially the vegetables. The only negative for me was the fat on the pork, which could have been rendered down a bit more.
Even though at this stage none of us had much room for dessert, they sounded too good to pass up. Everyone besides me decided on the Amarula Créme Brûlée, with churros and chocolate sauce, which looked terrific.
I chose the Sticky date pudding, with pumpkin ice cream, a macaroon, caramel espuma and a cocoa snap. Personally, I think I made the best dessert choice. The Sticky date pudding was delicious, and the pumpkin ice cream, a first for me, was heavenly!
Winter Winelands Experience
It was sad that our Winter Spa Day and lunch in the Winelands had to come to an end, but I think I can speak on behalf of our whole group when I say we had the most fantastic day, made even more special by the great company.
If you are in the Constantia Valley, I highly recommend a visit to Steenberg Estate. Enjoy a leisurely wine tasting followed by lunch at either Catharina’s or Bistro 1682. You can truly indulge yourself and include a relaxing spa treatment and a stay at the Steenberg Hotel.
