My bedroom is my sanctuary, a place to escape the world, relax, unwind and clear my head. To create the perfect “sanctuary”, it is vital to get the decor right! As I have shared previously, my taste in decor has evolved over the years, becoming paired down and minimalist. Unfortunately, our master bedroom is an ode to all things beige. My dream is to Create a Luxurious Bedroom, one reminiscent of some of the hotel rooms I have had stayed in.
How to Create a Luxurious Bedroom
When formulating a Decor Plan, I always put together a mood board. I find that this helps me keep track of my favourite decor trends, as well as items I would like to include in the room. I draw most of my decor inspiration, from interior decor websites, Pinterest, decor magazines or time spent in luxury hotel rooms. Our bedroom is in dire need of a makeover, so I thought I would share my tips on How to Create a Luxurious Bedroom. By following a few simple rules, you can create a space which is both luxurious and functional.
Get The Basics Right
Most people would be inclined first to tackle the ascetically pleasing part of the decor process and neglect the essential functional elements. Once you have established the core items, which in this case would be items such as a bed, bedside cabinets, dresser etc. you can start with the creative elements.
That said, a bed or bedroom furniture does not have to be solely functional. In other words, it can also be pretty and unusual. Quirky designs and textures can also add lots of interest to your room. My advice, though, is steering clear of furnishings that is so out there, that you tire of them after a few months.
Personally, I prefer wooden furniture, which is much easier to upcycle if you want to change the look of the room. If you do have cabinets or headboard which is looking old and worn, it is incredible what sanding and a new coat of paint can achieve. Another great idea is to change the “hardware” on your furniture, opt for crystal or even matt black which is currently popular.
Choose The Perfect Colour Palette
While colour is a very personal choice, there are simple guidelines you can apply to any room. It may be tempting to paint the walls in dark tones, but my advice would be to keep your wall colour as muted as possible. Something to also be aware of is that dark paint can make a small space, appear even smaller. If you do want to add a bit of drama then a feature wall is a better way of achieving it.
Colour schemes which I think work well to create a luxurious bedroom are tones of grey with white, black and white, navy and white, as well as blush and grey. Another option is to paint the walls in differing tones of the same hue, i.e. varying shades of grey or paint one wall in a dark grey and the rest in white. If you want to keep the look minimalist then paint the walls and ceiling white and add colour elsewhere.
Invest in Quality Linen
One of the most memorable things about most luxury hotels I have stayed in, second only to the most comfortable beds, is the luxurious linen. Naturally, not all of us have the budget to buy top quality Egyptian Cotton. My advice, however, is to spend a bit extra on quality cotton linen; not only will it last longer but you will feel the difference.
It is advisable, when buying linen, to opt for colours which you will not tire of too quickly. For as long as I can remember we have always chosen white sheets, as well as white duvet covers. Some of the duvet covers have had patterns, others satin stripes. Linen is one of the main things I would like to change in our current bedroom. Not to go completely wild, but I am considering a dark grey and white colour scheme for bedding. With touches of Citrine, a medium-deep shade of golden yellow, in the soft furnishings.
Add Luxurious Textures
Bringing in different textures can completely change the aesthetics of a room. When thinking luxury, textures such as glass, wood and leather come to mind. I also love metallics and one, in particular, is copper. Gone are the days when everything is matchy, matchy. Do not be afraid to mix it up and add a variety of textures, without making the space appear too busy.
Introducing either a faux fur throw or pillows can add just the right amount of opulence. Another trend I love at the moment is gorgeous chunky cotton knit throws.
Another great texture to include is greenery; this can be in the form of a plant or flowers. If you don’t have the budget to replenish fresh flowers continually or don’t have green fingers, then there are lovely fake plants available, which will work just as well.
Illuminate Your Space with Stylish Lighting
One of my favourite decor elements is lighting. As consumers, our choices are unlimited, with the vast array of lighting options available. A Pendant fitting is something I would love to incorporate into our bedroom. You really can have fun with lighting, using different shapes and textures. There are lots of affordable, good quality, options available if you shop around.
To create a luxurious feel, I would opt for chandelier style lighting but keep it modern and not too ornate. While quirky light fixtures are fun, remember to include a functional reading light on your bedside table.
Quick Fix – Declutter
One thing that an elegant, luxurious space is not, is cluttered. Decluttering your room especially your bedside table can have a dramatic effect on the aesthetics of the room, as well as being good for your mental state. You are after all trying to create an environment which is calming, relaxing – a haven of peace and tranquillity.
The image above illustrates just how easy it is to declutter and create a very completely different feel in an area. I have done this, using items I already own and although it is not the long-term look I wish to achieve, it is a quick fix which works.
If you are looking to declutter in your bedroom, my advice is to select a few personal items, in keeping with your decor theme. Display these items on your bedside table or dresser but don’t go overboard. When choosing furniture for your bedroom, draws or shelves are a must. If you have space a bookshelf is a good option; it will keep your books organised and ultimately, the room uncluttered.
Bedroom Makeover
I hope you have enjoyed these tips on How to Create a Luxurious Bedroom. Over the next month or two, I am hoping to share my bedroom makeover with you. The makeover will involve some DIY, as well as adding new pieces to my space. I have a limited budget, which always keeps it interesting. So watch this space, I hope it inspires you to make some changes of your own.
