One of my favourite pastimes is flipping through glossy decor magazines and finding interior inspiration for my home. A top decor trend to watch in 2018 is incorporating Black and White in interior spaces. More specifically, black is a colour trend which is definitely on the rise in both decor and fixtures.
Top Decor Trend
As with Grey and White, using Black and White for decorating creates a simple, yet elegant space. In our home, we have moved away from neutral shades such as cream or beige on the walls, in favour of white or grey-white. Hence, creating the illusion of space, as well as serving as a blank decorating canvas.
Black Bathroom Fixtures & Accessories
We recently completed the first phase of our renovations and a top decor trend, which has made quite an impression, is the use of black bathroom tapware and accessories. The trend has been around internationally for a while but more recently gained popularity in South Africa. At first, I was a tad sceptical about the longevity of this look, but it has grown on me. Although we did not install black fixtures in the new bathrooms, we added black accessories, i.e. mirrors, shelves, candles etc. We still need to renovate our master ensuite, and I think I will consider uring black fixtures, price dependent, naturally.
Creating a Blank Canvas
As I mentioned during our recent renovations, we have opted to paint all the walls and beams white. I was a bit concerned that the result would be quite clinical, but we love it. The rooms appear much more spacious. The bonus of creating a blank canvas is that we can introduce a variety of colours and textures, in the decorating process.
Our vision was to create a look which is minimalist and modern, which I think we have achieved nicely. Most of the areas still need to be completed with regards to furnishings and window treatments, but overall it has been a success.
Another area we have introduced black decor in our home is in the kitchen. We added both black light fittings, as well as black barstools from Mr Price Home Online.
Trend or Fad
What are your thoughts? Do you think this is a Trend you will embrace and use in your home, or do you consider it to be a bit of a Fad? I would love your feedback, so please leave a comment.

Hi Fiona, just love what you have done! I love black in small doses! Unfortunately it is so difficult to get that look (mostly costly) when one is still stuck in the brown and beige era!
Do remember that we can do your window treatments for you… there are amazing fabrics around at the moment!

Classic combination. Black and white are definitely a good option for simple decor.

Stunning combination, and fairly inexpensive to achieve. The classic white walls are so much easier to achieve rather than fussing over mixing the perfect colour for your walls. Definitely not a fad!
