This write-up is a tad behind schedule, too much wine, too little time! Last year the newly launched Backsberg Pinotage Rosé was awarded Double Gold at the Rosé Rocks wine awards. After tasting it, I can understand why.
Backsberg Pinotage Rosé
Backsberg launched their maiden Dry Pinotage Rosé in October last year, and it has been very well received. As I mentioned, it was a double Gold winner at the Rosé Rocks competition. As you know, I am an avid fan of a well balanced, dry rosé, and will choose it over white wine on most occasions.
From The Vine
The Pinotage grapes, picked before they are fully ripe, are then processed similarly to White wine. The grapes are crushed and pressed, followed by cool fermentation in stainless steel.
In Your Glass
This Dry Rosé has a beautiful light salmon hue, due to limited skin contact. It delivers red fruit on the nose, as well as the palate. Delicious notes of strawberry and cherry, give way to refreshing mint – a little taste of summer in your glass. You can also expect to pick up hints of melon and ripe tropical fruit. Low tannins and juicy, fruitiness on the palate, make for a very quaffable wine indeed.
Food and Wine
I could quite happily drink this wine on its own, but it does lend itself very nicely to food pairing. As I consider this more of a summery wine, I would steer clear of very rich dishes and go for either salads or seafood. A great option would be a Roast Chicken Salad, with avo, green beans, feta and a lime vinaigrette. For a seafood dish why not pair it with my Coriander Chilli Prawns, served on a bed of couscous.
Details and Pricing
The Rosé is currently out of stock on the Backsberg website, but you can buy it online from Cybercellar for R63 per bottle.
