Before we left for our trip to Croatia, Jess and I spent a girls night away, at Harbour’s End Self Catering Guest House, in Hout Bay. Given that we live in Noordhoek, the scenic drive over Chapmans Peak is the best and prettiest way to get to Hout Bay.
Harbour’s End
We decided to set off for our staycation early and have lunch in Hout Bay before checking in to our accommodation. There are a few great restaurants in the area to choose from, we decided on The Look Deck. As well as offering an excellent selection of seafood dishes, the view across Hout Bay Harbour is fantastic.
After a delicious lunch, it was time to check in at Harbour’s End. The Guest House, situated at the top of Seacliffe Road, is a short walk from Hout Bay Harbour and Beach.
Accommodation
Harbour’s End offers affordable self-catering accommodation, which as I mentioned is within walking distance to many of Hout Bay’s local attractions.
Guests can expect a home-away-from-home, with comfortable, well-appointed accommodation. The cottages and rooms, decorated with a nautical theme, sit perfectly in their seaside location.
We spent the night in Crows Nest Cottage, which can accommodate up to four people. Crows Nest is the largest cottage, with separate bedroom and en-suite bathroom. There are two double futons to accommodate additional guests. As well as an open-plan kitchen and lounge, the cottage offers guests use of an outside deck with Braai facilities, as well as outdoor seating. All linen and towels are supplied, and the units are serviced daily.
A special welcoming touch was a bottle of Blush from Hout Bay Vineyards. It was delicious! I had no idea until recently that Hout Bay had a Vineyard.
Top Things to do in Hout Bay
These are a few of the Top Things to do in the Hout Bay area, as per Tamlyn from Harbour’s End.
Mariners Wharf Restaurant – a 5-minute walk from the guest house.
Hout Bay Beach & Harbour – a 5-minute walk from the guest house, you can wander along the beach or the jetties and take in the fresh sea air or watch the seals playing in between the boats.
Red Bus – there is a bus stop just across the road from the Guest House. The Red Bus is one of the best ways to sightsee around Cape Town.
Hout Bay Harbour Market – a 15-minute walk from the guest house. The market is open from Friday to Sunday and boasts incredible local arts and crafts, plus live music and exceptional food.
Drumbeat Charters – a 10-minute walk along the Harbour and you can take a boat ride to Seal Island, Chapman’s Peak and the Shipwreck.
World of Birds – a 10-minute drive away, you will encounter the largest bird park in Africa.
Chapmans Peak – take a drive over this scenic route and take in the magnificent views.
Township Tours – support a local business initiative and take a tour of the local informal settlement.
Clay Café – if you are feeling artistic then head down to Clay café and paint your own ceramics.
I can also highly recommend a meal at the Indian Oven Restaurant, which is where we enjoyed dinner (at our own expense). Our meal was fabulous and was, without doubt, some of the best-tasting Indian Food I have ever eaten.
In Closing
If you are looking for affordable, home-from-home accommodation with a seaside feel, then Harbour’s End is the spot for you. Ideally located if you want to explore Hout Bay, as well as the greater area. Attractions such as Kirstenbosch Gardens and the Constantia Wine Route are only a short drive away.
