Our family loves to travel, and although international travel is fantastic, we do enjoy exploring more of our own beautiful country. Most of the local travel we do is by road, which is why I thought I would share my Top Tips for Safe Road Trips.
Top Tips for Safe Road Trips
Vehicle Maintenance
If you are planning a road trip, no matter the distance, ensure that your vehicle is road worthy. It is also important to carry out proper maintenance and be able to spot the Warning Signs Your Car Needs a Service. Remember to check things like your vehicle’s brakes and tyres regularly. If you are driving a rental, always inspect it thoroughly before you set off on your journey and ask to see the maintenance records.
Navigation
If you are travelling into unknown territory, it is vital to have some form of navigation; this can take the form of GPS, a cell phone navigation app or an old school map book. If you are on a solo mission, reading a map while driving can be a bit tricky, making a GPS device or app preferable. It can, however, be beneficial to have a map book handy, in the event your GPS leads you astray. Top tip: remember to keep your travel gadgets charged or pack a portable battery pack.
Roadside Assistance
Consider joining the AA or similar association; in the unfortunate event that your car does break down, you will be able to call for roadside assistance. I had a situation recently where my battery failed without warning, and I was so glad that I was a member of the AA. Certain Car Insurance policies also offer this service.
Stay Alert
The obvious no-no is driving under the influence. So DO NOT DRINK and DRIVE! Also, make sure you have had enough rest before you set out on a long trip and take regular breaks along the way. Better yet travel with a friend or family member and take turns to drive.
Passenger Safety
The number one rule in my car is BUCKLE UP! It is especially important if you are travelling with children; they should be strapped in at all times. Make sure you have activities and snacks to keep little ones occupied. This helps prevent them from getting restless and becoming a distraction.
