I am quite a health conscious person and try to stay away from fried food, that said, bring out crispy tempura prawns, and all resistance crumbles! I was recently sent the Philips Airfryer to try out; admittedly I was a bit sceptical at first. One of the health benefits it promises is fried food with up to 80% less fat! I am not sure about you, but I did not think that this could be possible.
Philips Airfryer
When the Philips Avance Airfryer XL arrived, I thought I would try something simple to test it out. I opted for french fries, a very popular commodity in our home! After peeling, slicing and soaking the cut potatoes, you need to dry them off and toss in oil. I used less than a tablespoon of olive oil for a large batch of fries, which were consumed faster than I could cook them. Was I impressed? Absolutely! Not only did the Airfryer produce delicious, crispy fries, using almost no oil but it is far less messy than conventional deep frying!
How Does It Work
The Philips Avance Airfryer XL is single-handedly making air the new oil. This simple, yet effective appliance is a versatile addition to any kitchen as it’s able to fry, grill, roast and bake wholesome foods using little to no oil.
The unique starfish shape circulates air around the entire unit, heating up to 390 degrees to ensure all food is cooked evenly. Food becomes crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The Airfryer removes up to 80% of the oil that you would have otherwise consumed while offering quicker cooking times, an all-in-one solution, as well as being easy to clean, and is much healthier.
Crispy Air-fried Prawns
I decided on two different recipes for the prawns, one being tempura batter and the other seasoned bread crumbs.
Ingredients
500g Prawns {remove the shell and butterfly}
For the Crumbed Prawns
Bread Crumbs
Plain Flour
1 Egg
Salt & Pepper {add chilli flakes for a bit of heat}
Tempura Batter
150 gr plain flour
10 gr baking powder
soda or sparkling water
Prepare the prawns, by removing the head and shell but leave the tail. Butterfly the prawns and set aside. To prepare the tempura batter, mix flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt and pepper. Slowly add the soda water, mixing gently. The mixture will remain slightly lumpy, do not over mix. Preheat the Philips Airfryer to 180°c.
Dip the prawns into your tempura mix, allow any excess mixture to drip back into the bowl. Place into the Airfryer basket, and do not allow the prawns to overlap. Slide the basket in and set the timer for 8 minutes.
For the crumbed prawns, place flour, a beaten egg and breadcrumbs into separate bowls. Dip the prawn into the flour, then the egg, and lastly into the seasoned breadcrumbs. Repeating until all the prawns are coated. Fry in the preheated Airfryer, in batches, for 8 minutes. Serve your Delicious Crispy Prawns immediately with a spicy chilli dipping sauce, and a wonderfully chilled glass of bubbly. For this dish, I recommend the Pierre Jourdan Blanc de Blanc.
Conclusion
The Philips Airfryer exceeded my expectations! The fact that it removes 80% of the oil that you would otherwise consume, and that I used no oil at all when frying the prawns is impressive. It is also super easy to use, makes almost no mess and it extremely easy clean. Essentially it ticks quite a few boxes for me, especially as a busy mom.
