On a recent media trip to Franschhoek I found myself at the wonderful Noble Hill Wine Estate. We often do wine tasting in the area but somehow have never visited Noble Hill. I am not sure why, because it is such a fantastic find!
Noble Hill Wine
Noble Hill Wine Estate is located on the Simondium-Klapmuts Road, which is a short drive from Franschhoek and approximately 45 km from Cape Town. They produce some of South Africa’s finest wines, dating back to the late 17th century.
Wine Tasting
The tasting room is a relaxed space and their cosy fireplace, is perfect for winter visits. Wine tasting at Noble Hill comprises of seven of the estate wines, which is dependant on seasonal availability. Tasting is charged at R 30 per person, which is waived with each bottle of wine purchased.
These are a few of the wines I enjoyed most during my recent tasting.
Noble Hill Blanc de blancs 2013 MCC
This single-vineyard Blanc de Blancs is aged on the lees for 24 months and made in the traditional method for sparkling wine, known as Méthode Cap Classique, in South Africa.
Although quite fruity on the nose, the Noble Hill Blanc de Blancs MCC has a balanced acidity and a elegant dry finish on the palate. I love the brut style of the wine, which is due to no sugar being added during dégorgement.
Noble Hill 2015 Sauvignon Blanc
Currently the oldest grape variety planted at Noble Hill, is Sauvignon Blanc. The 28 year old vines grow at the highest elevation on the estate.
I found the Noble Hill 2015 Sauvignon Blanc crisp and elegant, with green fruit and herbaceous flavours. It is a great summer wine and the natural acidity and elegant finish, will pair well with seafood dishes.
Noble Hill 2013 Syrah
The Syrah grape for those of you who do not know, is also known as Shiraz. This grape varietal is grown throughout the world and used primarily to produce red wine.
The Noble Hill 2013 Syrah was definitely my favourite tasting! By adding Mourvèdre and Viognier grapes, Noble Hill have created a wine which is rich, well balanced and deliciously smooth. It will pair well with red meat and rich flavours, making it the perfect wine for winter.
Enjoy a latin-inspired picnic
After wine tasting I recommend booking a table at Cosecha, the estates latin-inspired restaurant. Or if the weather permits, why not book a latin-inspired picnic on the lawn. {blankets are available upon request.} During your picnic drinks will be served by a member of the Noble Hill staff.
The picnic basket includes a charcuterie board, a selection of local cheeses, black bean & grilled corn salad, seasonal green salad, fresh avocado guacamole, artisan ciabatta, homemade tortilla chips, seasonal fruit & yogurt parfait, and Mexican wedding cookies. This will definitely be on my list of things to do in summer!
