One of my main aims as a travel enthusiast is to explore different parts of our beautiful land! We are often so focused on overseas travel that we miss the hidden gems right under our noses!
The Kloovenburg Pastorie
An area in the Cape we have not explored is Riebeek Kasteel. So when the opportunity arose to spend a night at The Kloovenburg Pastorie, in Riebeek Kasteel, I jumped at it!
Kloovenburg
Klooveburg Estate, situated in the Riebeek Valley, which is part of the Swartland, is approximately an hour’s drive from Cape Town. The location makes it perfect for a weekend break, to get away from the city buzz but still close enough for a day trip.
The Kloovenburg vineyards stretch along the lower contours of Kasteelberg {Castle Mountain). The vineyards offer a diverse collection of soils, altitudes and different slopes. Of the farm’s 300 hectares, 110 are under wine grapes. The best 30% of which are reserved for making Kloovenburg’s wines.
As well as producing fantastic wine and award-winning olive oil, Kloovenburg, also grows some of the best quality table grapes, for export.
In 1977, the Du Toit family purchased Die Pastorie (The Parsonage), one of the most recognised properties in Riebeek Kasteel, from the Dutch Reformed Church. Thirty-three years later, Pieter and Annalene du Toit transformed this landmark property, into one of the Riebeek Valley’s most luxurious guest houses – The Kloovenburg Pastorie.
Accommodation
The Kloovenburg Pastorie, lovingly restored and transformed into a beautiful guest house, has a definite feel of old-world charm.
Guests have the choice of three gorgeous en-suite bedrooms, as well as one super deluxe suite, with en-suite bathroom and private lounge area. All the rooms are air-conditioned and have tea and coffee making facilities.
We were fortunate to stay in the Deluxe Suite, which was a real treat! From the Egyptian cotton bed linen to the gorgeous Victorian black and white bathroom, it is pure luxury.
Grant and I both fell in love with the black and white tiled floor in the bathroom! It is definitely on our wishlist, for our own home.
Along with the luxurious accommodation, the Pastorie also has relaxing public spaces. These include a well-appointed lounge, dining room and kitchen.
The décor in the guest house is an elegant mix of French and Victorian. The walls, adorned with beautiful wallpaper and soft furnishings in plush velvet, add a touch of old-school glamour.
As well as stunning interiors, the outdoor spaces, at the Pastorie are as magnificent!
The manicured garden and the sparkling pool area, are perfect for relaxing.
We wasted no time at all, getting comfy on the loungers and enjoying some much-needed downtime!
We had the most wonderful stay at The Kloovenburg Pastorie; I only wish it was longer. The Pastorie is ideally suited for families, a romantic night away or you can book the entire guest house, for a special event. We will be returning next week, during the school holidays, with our girls. I cannot wait!
Wine & Olive Tasting
Included in your room rate, is a free wine and olive tasting at Kloovenburg Tasting Room. Once we had checked in at the Pastorie, we headed straight over to the tasting room to enjoy ours.
The staff at the tasting room were super friendly and made us feel most welcome! We had the best time, tasting a few of the estate’s wines, as well as sampling their delicious olives and olive oils! I must make special mention of the Kloovenburg Shiraz, which I love. Our favourite olive products were the Chilli Dipping Oil and Lemon Infused Olive Oil. We bought quite a few of the wines, as well as olives and oils, to take home with us.
Eating Out
There are few options when it comes to eating out in Riebeek Kasteel, but our favourite was Cafe Felix. It is a few minutes walk from the Pastorie, which is perfect – especially if you would like to enjoy a few glasses of wine. The bistro style restaurant has a great outside area, fantastic for alfresco dining! For more details on eating out in Riebeek Kasteel, you can visit Riebeek Valley Website.
