One of the things I love about what I do are the great adventures I get to experience! Two weeks ago Grant and I set off on one of the most anticipated adventures yet – a trip on Rovos Rail, from Pretoria to Cape Town! The first leg of our journey was flying from Cape Town to Johannesburg, to catch the train from Pretoria. We opted for our favourite local carrier Kulula.

As you know by now, I love to travel! I enjoy most aspects of travel – seeing new places, meeting interesting people, trying different cuisine, but one of the things I dislike about travelling is flying. A bit unfortunate don’t you think? It has nothing to do with fear but more to do with a vehement dislike of confined spaces. I also suffer from a dreaded thing called motion sickness!
We would all love the luxury of flying business class, but that is not a reality for most. For me, the best case scenario is finding an airline, local or international, which is reasonably priced and has excellent service.
One such airline is kulula. Privately-owned, kulula.com, was recently rated as the top low-cost South African airline, according to a recent industry report, released by the South African Customer Satisfaction Index (SAcsi). More than 1 200 customers were surveyed to evaluate their satisfaction with the domestic airline industry, and kulula came out as the top low-cost carrier, with a score of 71.5 out of 100.

On the morning of our trip to Johannesburg, the weather in Cape Town was rather stormy and wet, not pleasant to travel in! We were both relieved when we arrived safely at the terminal building, at Cape Town International!
Check-in was quick, and the staff were amiable and helpful. In no time at all, we were warm and cosy in the airport lounge, waiting for our flight to board.
Although there was a slight delay because of strong wind, we only departed a few minutes late. My greatest worry is taking off in bad weather, but the pilot had it all under control! Once the crew had done the necessary safety brief and settled everyone, Grant and I could get a bit of shut-eye. We were both exhausted after a very early start.
We landed at O.R.Tambo airport on time, as we had managed to make up a bit of time during the flight. Our friendly crew bid us farewell, and we were off to start the next leg of our journey.
Thank you kulula for a great flight! The staff, both on the ground and in the air, were friendly and professional! The rating of “Best South African Low-Cost Airline” is well deserved!
