Earlier this month saw the re-launch of a fresh, new-look Protea Hotel Fire & Ice in Cape Town! My hubby and I were invited to spend a night at the hotel and experience “More Fire More Ice” for ourselves.
Protea Hotel Fire & Ice
The Protea Hotel Fire & Ice Hotel is what I would call an urban hotel, situated in the heart of the Cape Town CB. The central location is perfect, especially if it is your first visit to Cape Town and wish to explore it in more depth. The views from the hotel of Table Mountain are outstanding. You are within walking distance to many of the trendy bars and cafes, on Kloof and Long Street.
The Hotel
The new-look hotel is fresh and modern, without being clinical. I love the clever use of glass and light, which marry the communal spaces. The crackled glass illuminated table is a work of art and the perfect spot to surf the web or simply kick back with a drink.
There are comfortable pause, decorated using relaxing natural tones and textures, as well as stunning design elements. These spaces are further enhanced by pops of bright colour.
The hotel staff is friendly and welcoming. We received a lovely sweet treat in our room, as well as a personalised welcome note. Our hotel room was fairly small, typical of most urban hotels. The shower cubical in the room, utilising the small space well. Overall the rooms have a great modern feel.
The stunning glass bar, on the ground floor, is the perfect place to unwind after a long day in the office. The bar area boasts a great coffee station, where they make the most delicious coffee, in fact, one of the best cappuccino’s I have had lately!
The bar also houses the hotel’s famous milkshake bar, perfect to fix your sweet craving. If its something stronger that you are after, then you have to try their cocktails, my favourite is the Cosmo!
The Restaurant
The hotel restaurant has also had a makeover. The darker tones of its predecessor are no more, they have been replaced by greys and whites, giving the space a more relaxed, modern feel. Natural light streams in through the windows, which is perfect for lunch time dining but the restaurant was too brightly lit for dinner. We did point this out to the manager, who said they would address it. {teething problems}
One of my favourite meals at the Fire & Ice is their Sliders! You can either order three, six, nine or twelve Sliders, from the selection on the menu. The Lamb Burger, Brown Mushroom{veggie burger} and Crumbed Chicken Sliders, are particularly good. You can also build you own burger, which my hubby did.
As well as being famous for their burgers, the milkshakes at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice are a must! We decided to share the Lindt-O-Licious shake – it was perfection! Although Protea Hotel Fire & Ice are already famous for their naughty and nice shakes in more than 30 flavours, in celebration of their recent makeover, patrons can enjoy six new flavours for summer. A salted caramel and popcorn flavoured milkshake, was created by one of their fans.
Breakfast
Breakfast served in the hotel restaurant, offers a large selection to choose from, including fresh fruit, cereal, cold meats or if its something heartier you are after, a hot breakfast. As well as the standard breakfast options the Fire & Ice is launching a breakfast burger! This will perfectly compliment the breakfast ‘regmaker’ station, where you will be likely to find triple espresso milkshake shots and a Red Bull Bloody Mary dispenser if you need a bit more help kick-starting your day!
Facilities
In the heat of summer, or if you are daring enough to brave the cold water, the quirky pool deck is the perfect place to relax.
If it is something more relaxing that you are after, then sunning yourself on the pool loungers, with a cocktail in hand could be the perfect place for you!
We enjoyed our stay at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice, especially the burgers and milkshakes! Thank you to the staff for a fantastic “More Fire More Ice Experience”!

Hi Fiona
Thanks for sharing this, the Fire & Ice in CT is one of my favorite hotels in CT as i have the Protea card, i was scrolling down looking at your pictures and i must say i was a bit disappointed not to see the Elevators pictures (Shark cage and the table mountain cable cart) as well as the smoking room with the coffin benches, those were my highlights of the stay, nonetheless, you did capture it beautifully! 🙂
