You may have read a recent post I did featuring my stay at the stunning Steenberg Hotel. As I illustrated in the article Steenberg Hotel and Farm is a one-stop luxury destination. As well as a tasting room there are two great restaurants on the estate. I promised I would give you a bit more detail about the “in-house” dining offered on the estate, so here goes.
Catharina’s
If you haven’t already read my review on Steenberg Hotel, I highly recommend you do. Catharina’s Restaurant is situated within walking distance of the Steenberg Hotel and features a main restaurant, bar area and separate dining area, perfect for special occasions.
The décor in the bar and restaurant is an elegant mix of modern and old-school glamour. A multitude of origami swans suspended from the ceiling, gives the space an almost magical feel.
Catharina’s is the epitome of modern fine dining! As well as being a lunch and dinner venue, it is also where we enjoyed breakfast, as guests of the hotel. You may choose to either dine indoors for breakfast or on the patio, surrounded by the beauty of the vineyards. What a view! If the weather is good I highly recommend sitting outside!
Breakfast
I was fortunate to spend two nights at the hotel, giving me the opportunity of having breakfast in the main restaurant and on the patio outside.
I must admit I am a bit fussy when it comes to breakfast, especially when it comes to the cooking of eggs! Well, Catharina’s did not disappoint from the stunning presentation and the freshest ingredients to perfectly poached eggs! I was a happy girl.
The breakfast menu at Catharina’s has something for everyone, ranging from the super healthy Fruit Plate or Berry & Nectar Pot, decadent Pancakes with Grilled Banana and Honey or Berry Compote and Mascarpone Cream, to a full Farm Breakfast, with all the trimmings.
Catharina’s bar area is a really charming space, with gorgeous comfy arm chairs and sofas, perfect for a quick coffee before you head out to see the sights or for a pre-dinner drink.
Naturally, part of dining at Catharina’s Restaurant is tasting and enjoying wines produced on the farm. My favourite red is definitely the Steenberg Shiraz!
Dinner
Dinner at Catharina’s is a rather splendid affair! Good food, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented – a true feast for the senses! Let’s just say there were lots of ooh’s and aah’s at our table when people sampled their dishes!
For starters, I had the Seafood Bouillion, while my hubby had the Carpaccio. The Seafood Bouillion, with Clams, Mussels and Line Fish in a Tomato & Saffron Bisque, is a flavour sensation and wonderfully light as a starter. I did not get to taste the Carpaccio, it was gone before I got the chance 😉
Grant decided on the Crispy Duck Pappardelle for mains and I picked the Chalmar Beef Fillet. The Duck Pappardelle, served with Sautéed mushrooms, in a Brandy Cream was heavenly, very rich but definitely a dish I would recommend having!
The Beef Fillet served with a Mushroom Ragout, Foie Gras Tortellini, Parsnip Puree and a Truffled Jus was excellent. The beef was cooked perfectly, medium rare, as ordered and the flavour combinations were wonderfully earthy and complimented the meat beautifully.
We could not resist ordering a dessert, which we shared to make ourselves feel less guilty! all the deserts sounded amazing but I was intrigued by the Pina Colada desert, as it combined flavours which I love, being lime and coconut. The Pina Colada desert is a Lime Cheese Cake, with Coconut Sorbet and Pineapple Jelly – it was deliciously refreshing, after quite a rich meal.
What a decadent meal! I would highly recommend you visit Catharina’s Restaurant if you have not done so yet. It really is a wonderful setting, with amazing food and excellent service. It is especially lovely for a romantic dinner for two or a special celebration.
