This past weekend we spent a rather chilly night in the Karoo, celebrating a friends 40th Birthday. It has been quite a while since we have travelled along the N1 in that direction but we were keen for an adventure.
The Karoo
We usually frequent the Garden Route or the West Coast for family holidays, so this was indeed a bit of an adventure! The drive after the Huguenot tunnel was a pretty site with all the vines wearing their winter shades of burnt orange and red. There was also snow on some of the surrounding mountains, which was a stunning picture to behold.
Karoo Village
We stayed in the rather eclectic Karoo 1 Hotel Village, which is located just outside De Doorns on a 2000 ha farm on the edge of the Hex River Valley. The accommodation is in the traditional, Cape Dutch Karoo style and the village has its own wedding chapel, a licensed restaurant and conference facilities.
We found the accommodation comfortable, the showers hot {very important in such cold weather!} and the staff friendly and helpful.
So if you are planning a trip up North anytime soon the Karoo 1 Hotel Village is well worth a visit.
