24 Hours in Hogsback – All the holiday you need
Out of all the places I’ve stayed in South Africa, the small town of Hogsback is the place that simply stole my heart. It only took one day in Hogsback, staying at Away with the Fairies, for it to feel like I’d been on holiday there for a week. Here’s how you can get that feeling too…
08:00 – Bath time
After a morning eye rub and a yawn it was bath time! Away with the Fairies has the most amazing view of the Hogsback Mountains and their very own viewpoint bath from where you can enjoy it.
09:00 Time for brekkie
Grab a healthy breakfast at the hostel. The giant bowl of muesli, yoghurt and fresh fruit is highly recommended. What better way to fuel your body for a day of adventure?
10:00 The treehouse
If you don’t climb the 15 metre treehouse, you won’t get the reward of the incredible view. The rough, yet sturdy, tree house will make you feel like a kid again, so give it a whirl. The ascent is like something out of a book – with every step up, you head higher into the delicate green vegetation that surrounds.
11:00 An enchanted hike
The Amatola Mountains are carpeted with thriving, dense forest and a hike through it is simply a nature lover’s dream. Set off on a hike through the rare Afromontane forest which leads to the Madonna and Child waterfall. Along the way you’ll pass Yellowwoods, wild plums, blackberries, butterflies of every colour and size, as well as rushing streams and mini waterfalls. The canopy of trees keeps you cool while trekking through this fresh swirl of green and brown.
15:00 Pancakes!
The hike’s path leads you out of the forest and onto Hogsback’s main street. Having worked off breakfast, it’s time for a bite to eat and a water-refill. Pop into The Gallery, which is a small café and curio shop and Mmmm your way through two banana and caramel pancakes.
16:00 Time for a dip
Away with the Fairies has converted an old reservoir into a swimming pool. After your pancakes and some well-deserved time resting under a shady tree, a dive and a swim is most definitely in order.
17:00 Melt into the sheets
Time for a massage!
19:00 Din-dins
At about 7 pm a massive bonfire is lit in the outside fire pit and is the best place to enjoy one of the kitchen’s homemade pizzas.
20:00 Sunset & fireflies
Gather a few newly acquired travel buddies and head down to the viewpoint with a bottle of wine to watch the sunset. After the sun has disappeared, wait a few minutes for the flashing bottoms of firefly-type bugs to appear. Magical!
21:00 Night cap
Head down to the hostel’s Wizard’s Sleeve Bar for a night cap before heading for bed. Refreshed, relaxed and de-stressed after only one day in Hogsback.
Thank you to our Travel Writer Dalene for this wonderful account of a day in Hogsback!
Hogsback is a magical world of mountains and forests. It is situated high up on the Amathole mountains of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, and is surrounded by centuries-old indigenous Afro-montane forests.

Arabella Country Estate
During the last school break we decided to take a road trip up the coast towards Knysna, it has been quite a while since we ventured through the Overberg. We love the area so much and it has lots to offer the avid traveler! Beautiful beaches, breath taking mountain ranges, amazing accommodation and restaurants – not to forget the awesome wine estates!
One of our first stops on our road trip was Hermanus and we were fortunate to be invited to overnight at the stunning Arabella Country Estate. For those of you who have never been, the Arabella Country Estate, is one of Cape Town’s most luxurious golf estates. It boasts panoramic views of the Palmiet Mountain Range, and the tranquil Bot River Lagoon. It really is a piece of paradise!
A bit about the Estate:
The estate is approximately an hours drive from Cape Town and 28 km from Hermanus and 7 km from Kleinmond. It is the perfect retreat if you want to get out of the city buzz but don’t want to drive too far!
The golf estate property spans a total area of 113 hectares and has a 1.6 kilometre front, leading out onto the most breath taking lagoon. The property is located within the Transitional zone of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve and the adjacent Bot River Lagoon, which is a designated Buffer zone of the Biosphere Reserve.
Arabella Country Estate is comprised of 236 freehold lifestyle estate properties, which have been developed to conform with prescribed architectural guidelines. It would really be an amazing place to live, I absolutely adore the beautiful surroundings and love the thought of secure estate living! There is also a Curro Private School in Hermanus, so if you were thinking of relocating {me dreaming} it would be perfect!
The estate is all about tranquility and community living, if you love the outdoors then it is the perfect place for you. As well as an 18-hole golf course, the area boasts mountain bike tracks, hikes and not to forget the amazing wine farms.
Our Stay:
As well as having residential accommodation Arabella Estate boasts a 5 Star Hotel and Spa. The Arabella Hotel & Spa, forms part of the African Pride Hotels brand, a Superior-Deluxe range of hotels, lodges and country houses.
Our accommodation for the night was a gorgeous Suite, with pananoramic mountains and lagoon views plus a bathroom to die for! The highlight for my youngest daughter was a TV above the bath!
Although the weather was a bit miserable when we arrived, we would not let it deter our enjoyment. It did unfortunately mean, that we could not make use of the amazing pool area in the Estate, the water was just a tad too cold! 😉
After lunch my hubby and I enjoyed a tour of the Estate, while the girls enjoyed the luxury of our suite and a snacked on a few decadent nibbles delivered by the staff.
Next on the agenda, for me, was a much need Hot Stone Massage at the hotels spa – HEAVEN!!!
While I enjoyed my pampering my hubby and the girls played a round of mini golf, which they all thoroughly enjoyed.
After a wonderfully relaxing bath it was off to dinner. We decided to eat at the Jamani Restaurant in the hotel, which was a lovely end to a great day!
I would like to thank both Arabella Country Estate and the Arabella Hotel & Spa for great attention to detail and making our stay with them extremely comfortable.
If you would like to find out more about the estate please visit the Arabella Country Estate Website or if you would like to book hotel accommodation you can visit the African Pride Website.

{ Travel } Southern Sun Cullinan Hotel
I was recently invited to spend an afternoon at the Southern Sun Cullinan hotel , which is just outside the V&A Waterfront, in Cape Town. My excitement for the day was twofold, not only was I eventually getting to meet Twitter friend Jodene Shaer, aka @Jodenecoza, for the first time but there was also the treat of a tour, of the Southern Sun {SS} Cullinan Hotel.
For those of you who have not visited the SS Cullinan before, it is a truly grandiose hotel, situated in the heart of the Cape Town CBD. It is part of the award-winning, Tsogo Sun, hotel group – well known for world-class luxury. The SS Cullinan is perfectly situated and a stones throw away from many Cape Town attractions, as well as the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town International Convention Centre and Long Street.
To start off our tour we were treated to a show of Sabrage by the hotel Sommelier. Sabrage, for those of you who do not know, is a rather impressive technique, of opening a Champagne bottle with a saber! This technique is usually used for ceremonial occasions. The force of the blunt side of the blade hitting the lip of the bottle neck, breaks the glass to separate the collar from the neck of the bottle. I have seen it done before but I must admit it impresses every time!
We were then treated to a selection of sushi and oysters, served outside in the stunning pool area – what a treat for a Tuesday afternoon! After merrily munching on these decadent treats and sipping heavenly Graham Beck bubbles{my favourite}, we were then whisked off for a behind the scenes tour of the hotel.
Our first stop was a peek into the Laundry area, which services the entire hotel. What a hive of activity – I must admit the sheer amount of laundry scared me! I will never complain about doing laundry again! The majority of local hotels, out source their laundry, having an in-house laundry is something rather unique to the SS Cullinan.
Next on the agenda was a Masterchef style, “team building” exercise! This is something, which the hotel offers to companies, as part of a corporate event. As our challenge we had to whisk egg whites, by hand, to stiff peaks and when we felt confident, hold the bowl over our head, to test our skill! Needless to say there was much hilarity, dotted with the expletive, while we all whisked our arms off! I am proud to say I won the speed test – I am not sure how, seen as whipping meringue is not my strongest suit!
Our next stop was a visit to one of the hotels suites and catch a glimpse of the luxury, which guests can expect, when they stay at the SS Cullinan. The suite was indeed 4 Star luxury at its best!
The bed was beautifully adorned with red rose petals in the shape of a heart and the bath was also filled with rose petals – so romantic! Not to mention the bubbly chilling in the bathroom – I wished I could have stayed the night!
Suites at the SS Cullinan include a butler station with tea and coffee-making facilities, a fully stocked mini-bar, television with DStv, a digital safe, complimentary WiFi, as well as a complimentary bath and pillow menu and a butler service.
The last stop on our tour was the hotel bar area, where the staff had a surprise in store for us. All we were told, was it would be like taking a step back in time 🙂 We were so curious to find out exactly what lay in store.
The surprise did not disappoint! They had created a Secret Treats experience for us – you really were transported back in time – just like a kid in a candy store! 🙂
It is truly evident that nothing at the hotel is too much trouble! The staff are prepared to go the extra mile and create a memorable experience for their guests. No detail is too small or insignificant! if you are thinking of travelling to Cape Town and in need of a hotel, I would highly recommend you try the SS Cullinan Hotel!
Thank you to both Jodene and the SS Cullinan, for a memorable and fun-filled afternoon!
