Announcing The Amazing Kiehl’s BB Cream

BB Cream has always been a struggle for me, particularly finding the right one. Most of them do not provide enough coverage or they make me breakout! Needless to say, I was very excited when the Amazing new Kiehls BB Cream arrived for me to review.

The Amazing Kiehl’s BB Cream

The Product

The first BB (the abbreviation for “blemish balm”) was developed by renowned German dermatologist Christine Schrammek in the 1950s. It was prescribed to patients to help conceal post-surgery imperfections, while nurturing and healing the skin. With today’s advanced skincare science, Kiehl’s chemists focused on this same essential functionality, concealing imperfections but not only for instant coverage but also long-term correction.

With 71% of customers expressing concern with uneven skin tone and lack of clarity, as well as nearly 29% citing dark spots as a concern, Kiehl’s chemists saw this as an opportunity. They have created a product, which effectively treats the skin, by offering skin tone correction using high potency Vitamin C.

The Kiehl’s BB Cream, has been developed with amino acid-coated natural mineral pigments, which conceals imperfections, while working to correct skin discolorations. Additional benefits include reducing the appearance of pores and fine lines, while providing all-day hydration and broad-spectrum SPF 50/ PA+++ protection.

The product is available in 5 shades – light, natural, medium, medium/deep and deep.

The Application

The formula is lightweight, yet still moisturising and gives you build-able coverage. I usually apply my serum first, one which I have been enjoying is the Kiehl’s Hydro Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate and then my Kiehl’s BB Cream. I find a little product goes a long way, so use it sparingly. Unless I am off to an event or meeting this will be enough of a base before I apply my makeup. If I am going out I will apply a bit of foundation or concealer to cover my pigmentation or any blemishes.

The Verdict

I think if it were a perfect world and I was still in my twenties, I would only wear a BB cream but there are definitely those days, when my skin needs a bit more coverage! That said I do really love the silky smooth application, as well as the fact that it has a SPF factor 50+++! So if it is BB Cream I am wearing, it will definitely be the Kiehl’s BB Cream.

I have tried two of the five shades, being Natural and Medium. I think Natural is more suited to my skin for winter but I think Medium will be better for the summer months.

This is definitely not a drugstore product in terms of price – at R525 it is certainly not cheap but spending a bit of money on good skincare is worth it!

Vichy Summer Loving

Summer is by far my favorite season! I love spending time outdoors, especially after a long cold winter. The feeling of sun on your skin is sheer bliss but it is so important to remember sun protection! Regardless of your skin type you need protection against the damaging effect of UV rays.

Investing money in a good sun cream, is as important as spending money on good skin care. Vichy is one of my favourite sun protection brands, which I have been using for years! I was excited when they sent me a few products from their latest Capital Soleil range to try!

As summer has officially arrived in Cape Town I thought it would be a great time to share a few Sun Protection Facts & Tips, as well as a chance to win a fab Summer Hamper!

Sun Protection Facts & Tips:

Use plenty of sunscreen, even if it is cloudy. Your sunscreen should have a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 and be a “broad-spectrum” sunscreen. This will ensure you are protected against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.
Apply your sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before going outside. Remember to reapply regularly, especially if you are swimming. No sunscreen product can truly be waterproof, most are water-resistant or a specifically formulated for use in water.
Check the expiration date of your sunscreen, as the active ingredients in sunscreens can lose their potency, so if it is old throw it out!
Do not rely on the SPF in your foundation to protect your face, use an additional sunscreen specially formulated for your face. Using a specially formulated sunscreen for your face is ideal, especially if you exercise outdoors, as they are usually targeted at sensitive skin, which will reduce the risk of breakout.
Cover up! Wear a wide-brimmed hat or peak cap, to protect your face and sunglasses which filter UV Radiation. If you are spending long periods of time in the water, then a second skin with Ultraviolet Protection Factor {UPF} of 30 or higher is a good idea, especially for young children. If you are going to be at the beach for a few hours, then be sure to take your sun umbrella along for added protection.
Pick your sun-time carefully! The sun is most intense between 10am and 4pm, so preferably spend time out doors in the early morning or late afternoon.

More about the Vichy Products I have been testing…

One of the products which I have really been enjoying is the Vichy BB Tinted dry touch face fluid SPF 50. I have really struggled to find a BB cream, which agrees with my sensitive skin and I was so impressed at how wonderful this cream feels on my skin feels! It’s BB tinted formula enhances and illuminates the complexion of the skin. The reinforced UV protection system protects against harmful UVB and UVA Radiation. My skin does not feel greasy or sticky thanks to the dry touch formulation. I use it on my face when I run and I have had not break outs or bad reactions to it! YAY! It also gives you great coverage and wonderfully “tanned” skin! It is the “ideal tan revealer” The formulation is paraben-free, hypoallergenic and resistant to water. RRP R279 for 50ml.

I have also been using the The Vichy Spray SPF 50+, for my body, when I run. I prefer to use a higher SPF factor when I am outdoors for longer periods of time. The Vichy Spray SPF 50+ contains Mexoryl, which helps protect against sun damage, brown-spots and sun-induced premature skin ageing. It is recommended for all skin types including sensitive skin. What I love about this protect is the light-weight, non-greasy application. My skin does not feel sticky after applying it, which can so often happen with higher SPF sunscreens. RRP R340 for 200ml.

May Beauty Favourites 2014

Hi beauties it is Beauty Favourites time again, I know this sounds so cliche but I cannot believe yet another month has whizzed on by! Here we are halfway through the year and winter is definitely making her presence felt!

L’Oréal Professionnel Volumetry Anti-Gravity Shampoo ~ I have very fine hair which has a tendency to become greasy but find that most volumising products leave my hair feeling heavy and looking dull! Garnier Pure Active BB Cream ~ I may have mentioned before I am not a BB Cream fan, very possibly because I have not found the right one yet. I do find that they tend to leave my skin feeling and looking oily after a few hours of wear but I have actually enjoyed the new Garnier Pure Active BB Cream. It is still not something, which I would use everyday but for a quick, out the door in 15 minutes, makeup look it does the job. The coverage is fairly light but again perfect if you just need to pop out to the shops or do the school run! The Garnier Pure Active BB Cream is recommended for skin which is prone to imperfections, it has a high performing formula combining 2% anti bacterial Salicylic Acid. With the concealing power of mineral pigments to instantly beautify your skin tone and help reduce the appearance of imperfections. Oygenetix Foundation ~ Oxygenetix Breathable Foundation is a breakthrough foundation to cover, help heal and minimize – even eliminate – procedural scars. Designed for doctors, this Breathable foundation covers and treats a wide variety of skin problems: skin injuries, wounds, rashes, cracked, dry skin, acne scars, rosacea and other skin conditions. I received this foundation to try after a Dermaceutic Milk Peel, which I had recently and all I can say is amazing!!! {I said that quite a lot in the video!} It really does calm your skin instantly and covers any evidence of redness. “Ceravitae”, the super charged oxygen complex in the Oxygenetix Breathable Foundation, increases collagen cell and connective tissue growth, in aging or wounded skin. Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Sultry ~ There was so much hype when the new Revlon Matte and Laquer Balms came out in SA a few months back but I sadly could not find any shades that I liked! I have been looking ever since and eventually I stumbled across this one, Sultry and I am in love! I was a bit worried that the Matte Balm would be a bit drying on my lips but I have been very impressed with the formulation. I will definitely be looking for a few more shades to try! Maybelline Clossal Go Extreme Volum’ Mascara ~ Masacara is my one, don’t leave home without it eye product! If I am wearing nothing else on my eyes I have to wear mascara – truth be told I feel naked without it! This is one of the new Maybelline Mascaras, which should be in stores from June 2014. The Clossal Go Extreme Volum’ Mascara, has a double pump wand, which gives you more volume on your lashes and 20 x more collagen. I have really enjoyed this mascara as it gives you volume, without clumping but then I have always been a fan of Maybelline mascara! RRP R124.95 Clicks or Dischem Stores {Disclosure Ranking:2}

Essie Nail Polish in Really Red ~ As you know I love Essie Nail Polish! Really Red is one of the Essie Iconic Colours and is a great basic red, which you should have in your nail polish collection! I love the pop of red on my nails, especially in winter when you tend to wear darker colours. RRP R109 available online from Zando {Disclosure Ranking:1}

Rain Biologie Coconut & Shea Intense Hydration Cream ~ This cream, which in my opinion is more of a body butter is stunning! I love anything with a citrus fragrance, so the combination of Coconut, Shea Butter,Tangerine and Sesame Oil, is right up my alley. The cream is recommended for Dry Skin and also contains Aloe Ferox. It contains 100% naturally derived ingredients and 63% organic ingredients. The formulation is wonderful and simply melts into your skin leaving it deeply hydrated. The moisturising formula, tones, stimulates and restores mineral content of the skin. It is non greasy, high in Vitamin A, E, F and safe to use during for pregnancy. RRP R169.00 Rain

Spring Makeup Toolbag

The weather is definitely improving and the flowers are blossoming – all signs that spring may indeed be here! With the change of season, comes brighter, lighter makeup colours – YAY! With this in mind we asked Kirsten Murphy Rossiter, a Cape Town based makeup artist, to share a few of her essentials for a Spring makeup toolbag.

Step aside foundation!

Revlon BB cream ~

I love this bb cream, probably because at the moment I am feeling so pale and it is a tad darker than my winter skin tone, so it gives me a slight tan! It also contains an SPF of 30, which is so great for those days when the sun shows its beautiful face. It gives my skin a lovely even tone and I have found myself using this product more often than my beloved MAC foundation!

Peachy Cheeky

“Peaches “ Sheertone blush from MAC ~

Most people get scared when I suggest this blush, because it looks so peach! But that is the beauty of it, a soft peach tone, with just the right amount of colour. Because it is a sheer blush, you don’t have to worry about applying too much. This has been my all-time favourite blush!

Make it Stick!

MAC Fix + spray ~

I highly recommend this hydrating fix it spray! It acts as a beautiful mist to hydrate skin that has been powdered , it also fixes your makeup and helps it too stay put! Or just wear it on its own when your skin need some refreshing. This is a huge favourite of mine, which that I always use when doing brides makeup. This product is an all year round essential!

Tease Please!

Pink lips are making a huge comeback this Spring and I love this pretty pink Lippy, the colour just speaks for itself ! It is creamy and matte all at the same time. Make sure your dry winter lips have been well exfoliated and hydrated before wearing a matte lippy.

A MAC favourite that has been around a long time. MAC describes it as “loudmouth orange!“ Its creamy, amplified texture is easy to wear and is perfect for making a bold lip statement. A great introduction to welcoming Spring!

Fake it!

Maxfactor False Lash effect Mascara ~

This Mascara Does it all! It lifts, thickens and really does give you the illusion of false lashes! I have been asked on numerous occasions, when wearing this mascara, whether I am wearing falsies! This is another essential product, which I cannot and will not live without, all year round!

Neon Neon

“Out to sea” MAC PowerPoint liner ~

If a neon eyeshadow is a little bit of a reach for you then why not give your eyes a bright pop of colour in a subtle way! Off to sea is a Bright Blue liner that has intense colour and great staying power.Wear it on the waterline of your eye and don your top and bottom lashes with some serious mascara and you’re right on trend!

Get Nude

“ Don’t Pretzel my buttons “ OPI ~

On my search to find the perfect Nude Nailcolour, I came across this in a nailbar in Singapore. When I’m performing, on stage, my nails are starved of coloured nail polish (which is a struggle because nail polish is such an obsession of mine) so a Nude is the only option. This in my opinion is the perfect nude, its creamy, biscuity and so there! OPI is such a great brand and the nailcolour just lasts for days ( providing you wear a base and top coat). It is also long lasting in the bottle, which is important, especially whilst travelling from warm to colder climates! Months later it is still as good as new.
